Singapore eBuzz! : Hyrul Gathering 2008

Last Saturday I had an opportunity to be part of Hyrul’s gathering. I’ve been maintaining his website for two years and this is the first time I’m meeting his fans, the Hyrulites. It was a free and easy meet the fans session. Fans, friends and families came to show their support to this talented Anugerah 2005 winner.

The actual number I would never know but I think there were more than seventy fans in the Handalan Theatre of Nee Soon South CC. I was told this was the same venue of last year gathering. The stage was simple because the focus was on the man and nothing more.

Fans who came will get to know some secrets and habits of him like, what he does first when he woke up? What’s his ringtone? Who’s picture is on his handphone wallpaper? You weren’t there so you’ll never know. (Haha!) There were lots of games that we get to see the funny side of him. He even got punk’d in one of them.

You begin with a nasally yet emotive vocal, build up to a three-chord chorus featuring crunchy guitars, and layer the lyrics with just enough faux cynicism.

In the band’s native French Canadian: Voila! You’ve got an emo hit. The group’s third full-length album, the simply titled “Simple Plan,” offers glimpses of something more, but invariably falls into to the same old pattern.
