Movie Review : Doubt

Set in 1964, Amy Adams stars as Sister James – a relatively new nun assigned to a Bronx Catholic school run by the tough as nails, no-nonsense, authoritarian nun, Sister Beauvier (Meryl Streep). While she and Sister James don’t see eye to eye about how to teach and control the children, the young nun seeks out Sister Beauvier when she becomes concerned about what might be an inappropriate relationship between the school’s first African-American student, and Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman).

Coming in the wake of world wide scandals of paedophile priests, Doubt is both relevant and surprising. It’s surprising because of what writer/director John Patrick Shanley does with the subject matter, which is to take a completely unexpected course. It’s not a simplistic story about clear cut moral choices, but a complex case that is riveting for its lack of black and white, and rich in the greys that make up much of our lives.

Movie Review : Elegy

Elegy is a gorgeously shot, classy drama with a terrific supporting cast, but Kingsley’s curiously hollow performance means it doesn’t quite deliver the required emotional punch.

Based on a novel by Philip Roth (The Dying Animal), Elegy stars Ben Kingsley as David Kepesh, an author and college professor who abandoned his wife and child many years ago, something his son (Peter Sarsgaard) has never forgiven him for. Since then, the closest thing David has had to a meaningful relationship is his monthly hook-up with self-made businesswoman Caroline (Patricia Clarkson), an arrangement that seems to suit them both perfectly.

Movie Review : Inkheart

Enjoyable fantasy adventure in which the strong cast, likeable characters and impressive special effects provide just enough distraction for you to ignore the plot holes.

Based on the popular novel by Cornelia Funke (the first in a trilogy), Inkheart stars Brendan Fraser as single father Mo Folchart, who has the extraordinary ability to bring fictional characters to life by reading aloud. However, there’s a problem: when a character is brought to life, a real person disappears into the book’s pages, as Mortimer discovered to his cost when his wife Resa (Sienna Guillory) disappeared while he was reading to their three-year-old daughter Meggie (Eliza Hope Bennett).

Movie Review : Bride Wars

Watchable comedy, enlivened by strong performances from Hudson and Hathaway and a decent script that isn’t afraid to make the central friendship the most important relationship in the movie.

Directed by Gary Winick (13 Going On 30), Bride Wars stars Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway as Liv and Emma, two childhood best friends who’ve grown up with a shared vision of their dream wedding: a June ceremony at the Plaza Hotel in New York. When both their boyfriends (Chris Pratt and Steve Howey) propose, the pair are delighted and head straight for the wedding planner (Candice Bergen), but their happiness is cut short when a clerical error results in both their weddings being booked for the same day.
