For the most part the DreamWorks animation machine has been consistently effective in keeping the kiddies and grown-ups fascinated by the engaging, imaginative characterizations not to mention the dazzling CG-animated visuals that encourages that eye-popping sensation. After all, family fare is meant to pass the 4-F inspection: fun, flashy, frivolous and feisty. Guess what…the wacky and wily Monsters vs. Aliens definitely had won its seal of approval in these categories. Although not the best offering from the DreamWorks kiddie-crafty factory, Monsters vs. Aliens still packs a sufficient amount of jolting jocularity that is sure to satisfy the entertaining mindsets of youngsters and oldsters alike.

Entertaining sequel that survives its paper-thin plot and lazy writing thanks to superb special effects and a trio of terrific comic performances from Amy Adams, Hank Azaria and Bill Hader.

Ditching its US subtitle of Battle for the Smithsonian, Night of the Museum 2 sees Ben Stiller reprising his role as former night guard Larry Daley, who’s now making a living as an inventor and is saddened to hear that his reanimated friends at the Natural History Museum are being shipped off to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. However, when he receives a distress call from miniature cowboy Jedediah (Owen Wilson), he rushes to the rescue, only to discover that Egyptian ruler Kahmunrah (Hank Azaria) has come to life and is planning to enslave mankind.

Enjoyable thriller, thanks to a strong cast, a decent plot, some good set-pieces and some surprisingly pacey direction from Ron Howard.

Directed by Ron Howard and based on the book by Dan Brown (a prequel in book form, but a sequel here), Angels and Demons sees Tom Hanks reprising his role as symbologist Robert Langdon (this time with a more sensible haircut), who is summoned to Rome when the Vatican uncovers a deadly plot by centuries-old underground organisation the Illuminati. The plot involves the kidnapping of the preferiti (the Cardinals most likely to be elected Pope) and the use of an anti-matter time bomb (don’t ask) to destroy Vatican City, so Langdon teams up with beautiful Italian scientist Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer) and together they race around Rome, solving a trail of clues that will lead them through the 400-year-old Path of Illumination in time to stop the bomb from exploding.
