Anugerah Review 2009 : Episode Five

Previous week the female Anugerettes had performed so well that I had mentioned the male contestants need to step up their performance tonight but sadly it didn’t. As more and more neutrals choosing their favourites I’m sure the atmosphere in the theater is deafening with vociferous support from different camps and the best way to listen to them sing is at home on TV.

Starting the event with the announcement of the results for the female Anugerettes. As expected Nora, Kunjung and Sarah had to be continuing their journey in Anugerah 2009 and gladly they did. Two contestants had to leave and they were, Yanie and Asilah. All the best to both of them in the future. Hopefully they will get better out of this show and be prepared to be called up for wildcard round.

This week theme is about Our Icons in the malay music industry of Singapore. Songs from BDB, Sweet Charity, Ramil Sarip, Jat Ali and Osman Hamzah would be sang by the male Anugerettes. Sounds interesting but we shall see how they perform as you keep on reading this entry.

As usual they are divided into two groups, ‘Kumpulan A’ and ‘Kumpulan B’. Only left with 6 contestants in total I was hoping for a longer singing time for each contestants but I didn’t feel it get any longer. Did it? Guest judge for this week was Indra Sharir.

‘Kumpulan A’ consists of Azhar, Kamsani and Chirul.
Azhar was the first to perform, singing Andai by Jat Ali this genre is his forte and I’m confident he would be able to carry this song well and he did. Clean, clear and powerful voice. A controlled performance by him but a predictable one as the judges had pointed out, as for me its ok since he might be already thiking about his image that he would like to carry on when he’s out of this competition. One vote for him for being consistant.

Next was Kamsani, singing Gadis Melayu by Osman Hamzah. This is a fast song that’s thought to be simple but if you’re not fit and you don’t understand the song well its going to produce a disasterous performance and Kamsani almost did due to lack of fitness. A confident performance that did not match with its vocals. Risky one for him but admirable attempt. Still irritated by his nasal singing though. One vote for being brave.

Chirul singing Bukan Kerna Nama by Ramli Sarip, a very soulful song that needed full concentration on feeling and conveying its message but he fell short of producing it. Doing a sleek RnB move in the song killed it totally which shows he know nuts about the song and if not for his unique tone it was a disaster and he didn’t even hit the high notes of this song by scaling down instead of going up during the chorus. Total bummer. Work harder to widen your range Chirul. No votes for him for destroying a very good song.

‘Kumpulan B’ consists of Wawan, Hydir and Sein.
Wawan singing Merpatih Putih in his own arrangement which actually sounded good with his vocals. Since its his arrangement, he felt the song better I guess. Love his clean voice and his high registers are amazing. Work harder to achieve better vocals. One vote for being brave too.

Next was Hydir singing Teratai by Sweet Charity. A difficult song to carry for a young boy, if not for his almost ‘Jamal’ vocals it would be a disaster since he didn’t feel the song at all. He has to reduce his stiff facial expressions when he sings. It’s annoying at times but for his fans it’s perfectly fine I guess. Not his best performance tonight. Learn to feel the song than just singing it technically. No votes for being a disappointment.

Sein singing Zakiah by Sweet Charity. A rock influenced song, which need that rocking attitude but he didn’t convey it visually and vocally. A great disappointment tonight, should have managed to rock the house with this song but he didn’t. Need to be focus on stage and atleast try to perform. Forgetting some lyrics does not help with the scores Sein. Need to work harder. No votes for him.

Then came the group performance after the break. I don’t really like to comment on the group performance since every week I don’t see any teamwork or a good harmony between them so I feel this segment is just a filler that’s all. It’s actually embarassing to watch amaturish group performance so Suria please scrap this segment and focus on solo performance instead.

The double Fs did quite well tonight as Fauzie managed to complete the show smoothly. Congrats to him and Fiza O is professional as always.

Would be nice to see their standing after the show as well. Suria can make it happen? Would make it more interesting isn’t it? The results for this episode will be revealed on next week show so keep voting people.
