Firstly I would like to address this irritating problem that’s happening in Anugerah 2009 and please be reminded that I’m a TV viewer. A message to rude and inconsiderate fans who likes to shout when its time to listen. Yes I know you’re excited for your “idol” but please be quiet and listen when the judges are commenting because what they say could be an important advise for the Anugerettes.
Please DO shout during your “idol” performance all you want to cover their off key singing and 50-50 performances but during the judges comment, do try to listen. Thank you.
Tonight are the female Anugerettes turn to perform and this week it’s the same theme as the last, Singapore Icons in the Malay music industry, they are Anita Sarawak and Rahimah Rahim.
No results for tonight as all will be revealed next week for the men and the ladies. So we have to wait another week for that.
As usual, six female being divided into two groups, ‘Kumpulan A’ and ‘Kumpulan B’. Group A and Group B.
‘Kumpulan A’ consists of Hafizah, Sarah and Catty.
Hafizah was first to perform, singing ‘Seksis’ by Anita Sarawak. A powerful stage performance but I sensed a little nervousness in her vocals which make her sounded shaky at some parts. True its not a competition song since it doesn’t really test ones vocal range but a smart choice for her ability I guessed. Need more from her vocally though. Energetic but please improve on the vocals. One vote for her energy on stage.
Sarah was next singing ‘Bawalah Ku Pergi’ by Anita Sarawak. Always a consistent performer vocally, labelled a safe performance but who cares if you can sing like that. She has good vocal range and control I’m sure she can sing a “pop” song too. She’s a balladier that’s her identity and people vote her because of that. Clean powerful vocals. Try to be unsafe next time? Nahh I prefer her now. Look out for her. One vote for consistency.
Next was Catty, ohhh dear Catty… a brave performance to sing a fast number. Maybe via suggestions from Eddie Ali if I’m not mistaken which was a mistake. She should just stick to ballads and atleast her flaws in moving on stage would not be too obvious althought at the back of my mind I know its tough for her to do that, but would love her to prove me wrong if she’s in the next round. Nice vocals but performance wise work on it, need more energy. No votes tonight sorry.
‘Kumpulan B’ consists of Nora, Nanie and Kunjung.
Nora was up first singing ‘Bisikanlah Cinta’ by Anita Sarawak. Labelled another safe performance but for me she has the vocal quality to sing a “pop” song anytime. She was confident on stage. Good vocal control and overall a solid performance. She just needs to find her charisma “x-factor” to be the next big thing in our music industry. She need to find her identity and know what she wants after Anugerah. The one to watch. One vote for her for being consistent as well.
Nanie was next singing ‘Jika Begini’ by Rahimah Rahim. She came out nervously and her intro was not convincing therefor I knew her performance will be the same too. She had that wide eyed expression a lot during the start and middle of her performance which luckily lessened when it reached the end. Not a convincing performance and her posture is all wrong. Work on her confidence on stage please. Vocally not there yet as well. Sorry no votes for her.
Next was Kunjung, the hot favourite in this competition. This sounded like a safe performance to me. Vocally she’s powerful I can’t really deny that fact because when she opens her mouth to sing her projection is amazing but… she need to control her vibrato. A song does not need so much vibrato, she sounded unconvincing and irritating at most parts especially for a rock influenced arrangement that she picked. When she’s not doing it, she hit the notes clearly. Prefered the original version of the song though. One vote for being safe? Consistant?
Next was the group performance! Last week performance by the men left me with a bad aftertaste so I wasn’t looking forward to the ladies. I would like to say, for the ladies you can keep this segment. Both group performing admirably and working well together. Some enjoying a little more than others. Hafizah enjoyed her performance a lot. Vocally everyone did their job but there where lack of harmonising or I hear none of it maybe because they all can’t do it well so mostly were sung in melody parts. Should do this to the men also next time.
Overall, enjoyable performance by the ladies, they did well in maintaining their high standards. I pity the men now because even the judges are starting to feel like I do too. A bad thing to do but the men just need to buck up and do their very best next time. Stay tuned next week for all the results!
