eBuzz Events : Heart(h)

Four women – An expectant mother, an ex-convict, an NGO activist and a corporate executive meet while crossing the narrow bridge in the Afterlife that leads to Heaven but stretches over Hellfire. A slip of the foot on the narrow bridge due to bad deeds dragging on your heels would lead to a descent into Hellfire. While negotiating that bridge, they discover that they are all from the same land, Malaya – although only one of them calls it Malaya. One calls it Malaysia. One calls it Singapore. The fourth calls it home.

A play about how much one’s identity is tied to the motherland, how much is shaped by prescribed categorizations and what a motherland truly means. And of course, whether all of this matters in the path to Eternity.

In Malay with some English, Heart(h) is the opening show of Teater Ekamatra’s 2010-2011 season; a season that presents the remaking of Teater Ekamatra with a new artistic vision.

Movie Review : Men Who Stare At Goats

Hugely enjoyable, frequently hilarious comedy-drama with a superb script and terrific performances from Clooney, McGregor and Jeff Bridges.

Based on Jon Ronson’s non-fiction bestseller, The Men Who Stare At Goats stars Ewan McGregor as Bob Wilton, a Michigan journalist who’s come to Kuwait in the hopes of proving himself to his estranged wife (Rebecca Mader) by finding a war story that will make his name. However, he gets more than he bargained for when he meets Special Forces operator Lynn Cassady (George Clooney), who tells him he’s a member of a secret squad of psychic spies, trained in the 1980s by soldier-turned-Jedi-warrior Bob Django (Jeff Bridges).

Event Review : Anak Wayang

Event Review : Anak Wayang

Anak Wayang is a success in my eyes due to the passion and dedication felt poured into this grand theater production. A huge collaborative effort by 4 groups that had been living and preserving our Malay culture. They are Sri Warisan Som Said Performing Arts Ltd, Sri Anggerek Bangsawan, Sriwana and Sri Mahligai. A commendable effort by these 4 groups to compliment each other in their different art forms to produce Anak Wayang.

It tells the story of the life of an ‘Anak Wayang’ since the early days before the Japanese occupation till now, conceptualized by Adel, beautifully scripted and directed by Marina Yusoff and well narrated and told by our Anugerah Skrin winner Shahril Wahid. Combining dance and drama from Sri Anggerek and Sriwana with well played scores by Sri Mahligai this production is not to be missed. Though there’s room for improvement mostly technical/equipment wise but with their enthusiasm in every performances it’s almost forgivable and I was entertained.

Event Review : Anak Wayang

A special mention that I wish to highlight here was the performance done by the young ones under Sri Warisan Melentur Buluh. At such a young age being properly trained and nurtured to performing arts they managed to portray their emotions on stage. I personally am truly glad that there are these young brave ones for our future in our arts scene.

Not wanting to reveal too much on this production, I’m recommending you to catch their last performance today, Saturday, 26th March 2010 at 3pm and 8pm, Victoria Theater. My main thought after watching this wonderful production was, how I wish it was done on a grander stage with the support of better equipments just a stone throw away from this venue. How I wish…
