Stone stars as Olive, the girl who doesn’t get any attention. However, all of that changes when she fibs to her best pal, Rhiannon (Aly “Go Hellcats!” Mischalka). Instead of admitting she had a boring weekend doing nothing, Olive makes up a story that she had a date with a college dude, and they went all the way.

As the story spreads, and Olive becomes the most talked about girl in school, she helps others who want to boost their reputation as well by saying they also have done the dirty with her. The duds start to look like studs, and Olive enjoys all of the new found attention.

Easy A is an exciting movie for the great dialogue and the dynamic star presence of Stone.

Olive is a character all about attitude, but also allowing her to show some of that teen girl vulnerability, and Stone excels at both. She might be a Hollywood bombshell, but Stone feels real with a natural delivery. She’s not dependent on her looks. Instead, the actor has depth and plenty of charisma.

Easy A also benefits from sassy, funny dialogue. Writer Bert Royal gives us a movie about kids, but never short changes the adults. In Easy A, these are not the typical dumb adults that litter movies of this genre. They are smart, mature, enjoyable and hilarious. Playing Olive’s parents, Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson are my favorite on screen couple of the year with their irreverence and undeniable love for each other. They could be the coolest parents since Claire and Cliff Huxtable!

Olive’s own love story might serve to wrap up the movie, but it feels tacked on and unnecessary. It’s almost like Royal and director Will Glluck didn’t know where to go with the movie, and how to end it, so they chose the safe, routine, more dramatic route, which completely is the opposite of the rest of Easy A. This movie could get an easy A.

Who cares about seeing the Smurfs of Avatar in 3D? This would have been a perfect use of it.

Based on a true story, Denzel Washington stars as Frank, a grizzled veteran train engineer assigned to teach the new, wet behind the ears conductor, Will (Chris “Captain Kirk” Pine), the ropes.

It turns out Will has some pretty hefty connections, and the company wants to phase out some of the old timers, so Frank is ready to grin and bear it, but he won’t compromise on safety or doing the job the right way.

Since this was a true story, and you would have remembered a story on the news about a train exploding, do you still feel the drama and tension?

I think the highest praise for any movie is the following, “There is no good time to sneak off to the bathroom.” Unstoppable is one of those movies that is non-stop action from beginning to end as it becomes a cheesy crowdpleaser full of silliness, tension, excitement and thrills.

Can you predict some of the action? Of course.

Sure, Denzel delivers his patented laugh and righteous indignation full of the bombast you wish you could muster for 10 seconds in your life.

Sure, Pine is required to take his shirt off for those in the crowd who want to see if he has the abs to be Matthew McConaughey’s heir apparent.

Sure, writer Mark Bomback inserts all sorts of platitudes about how Frank and Will are doing it for their families, and delivers a bunch of mushy backstory that makes Days of Our Lives jealous.

It’s not great filmmaking, but you are willing to forgive all of the faults and sins to be cheering at all of the right moments, enjoying the ride and walking out feeling like you got your money’s worth (even if it wasn’t in 3D).

However, Mark decides to go off on his own with buddy Eduardo Saverin (Andrew “The Next Spider-Man” Garfield) to create The Facebook, which leads to a lawsuit as it becomes the hottest thing on the internet since Paris Hilton’s sex tape.

Even your grandmother knows what Facebook is, but neither of you know the story of alleged betrayal, theft and corporate finagling that made it what it is today, and makes The Social Network so compelling and captivating.

Right from the beginning, in the very first scene, the audience learns The Social Network is something special as writer Aaron Sorkin fills the movie with the snappy, smart, mind-blowing dialogue you loved in The West Wing, Sportsnight and The American President. Even more shockingly, Sorkin brilliantly incorporates the phrases and actions we associate with Facebook, like the Relationship Status, Facebooking someone and more, but not in an annoying, obvious way. Each one brings a laugh and instant recognition for how smoothly he drops it into the script.

Then, Sorkin and director David Fincher set up The Social Network to show us the human drama, not the technical business speak. As Fincher wonderfully goes back and forth between testimony given by those suing Zuckerberg and the story of how they all got to that law firm, we see the friends working towards a dream, but how that dream turns into a nightmare of litigation, betrayal, petty feuds and the broken hearts as Facebook became a multibillion dollar business enriching only some. You don’t need a Harvard MBA to understand what is happening here, and you never wonder why something is important to the story.

Of course, The Social Network wouldn’t be the same without the cast. With Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake in the picture, the audience is seeing some of the best young actors in the business today, and even I am shocked to be including Timberlake in that sentence. Mr. Bringing Sexy Back might be bringing back an Oscar nomination to the Timberlake abode if the Academy voters are willing to open up their minds and recognize undeniable talent when they see it.

More importantly, Eisenberg makes Zuckerberg equally admirable and detestable, kind of like any successful CEO. He never goes too far either way, so the audience gets to debate among themselves whether or not the young billionaire is a hero or villain, but I worry the supporting cast might steal some attention from Eisenberg as he deserves a Best Actor Oscar nomination for a great performance in a movie full of them.

Armie Hammer also will blow you away as the Winklevoss twins. You never feel like it is one person playing two roles as each one gets his own personality, voice tone, attitude, and more. In a world where special effects gurus can make Superman fly, the Cloverfield monster attempt to eat you and take Captain Kirk to worlds we could never imagine, Fincher and Hammer top them all by making everything so seamless on screen.

The Social Network is awesome. Highly recommended.

Except for the tacked-on ending (which compromises about 60 seconds out of a 124-minute feature), he also shows a willingness to go against traditional Hollywood formula, to go where the story demands rather than to where the audience feels safest. That’s the mark of ambition, and also what makes The Town so totally engrossing.

The story is set in Charleston, a real Boston neighborhood known for spawning an uncommonly high percentage of bank robbers. Affleck stars as Doug MacRay, one such criminal, who in the opening scene pulls off a bank heist with his best friend/right-hand man “Jem” Coughlin (The Hurt Locker’s Jeremy Renner) and some other cohorts. The too-edgy-for-his-own-good Jem insists on deviating from the plan by taking the bank manager, Claire Keesey (Rebecca Hall), hostage.

The Town has all the bank robbing action you could want, plus a couple of really suspenseful escape scenes. Affleck knows how to stage such sequences so they feel authentic and not too movie-ish. Even when the guys don nun masks to rob a bank, it seems creepy and dangerous rather than silly.

Underneath the crime-related matter lies much examination of human emotions. Doug’s convict father (Chris Cooper) and his runaway mother both figure into the psychology of why he robs banks. His ex-girlfriend (Blake Lively), who also happens to be Jem’s sister, is trying to tie him down by using a child that isn’t even his. He’s dating a woman whose trauma he is directly responsible for. He wants to go straight because of his feelings for her, yet loyalty to Jem makes that easier said than done. It’s natural to sit upright and pay attention to a movie when a group of masked robbers walks into a bank with semi-automatics; the beauty of The Town is that it keeps you every bit as hooked when you’re just watching two people talking. The emotional action is just as gripping as the physical action.

Every single performance feels natural, with Renner and Hall (Vicky Christina Barcelona) doing work that could potentially net them Oscar nominations. Affleck is terrific too, giving himself one of the best roles he’s ever played.

As I said, the final minute of The Town feels a bit out of sync with everything else, but that isn’t even close to being a fatal flaw. This is a powerful movie, one that is refreshingly smart and grown up. I hope Affleck chooses to keep working on both sides of the camera.
