The Proposal
8/10
Enjoyable romcom that succeeds thanks to the chemistry and comic timing of its two leads, but it’s also formulaic, completely predictable and nowhere near as funny as it thinks it is.
0.3
G.I. Joe : Rise Of The Cobra
8/10
A trashy but nonetheless hugely enjoyable action-adventure with superb effects, exciting action sequences, likeable characters and a neat line in techno-gadgetry.
0.3Fast-paced, entertaining sequel with plenty of gags, violence and swearing to keep fans happy, though it’s not as snappy or as inventive as the original.
0.3
Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince
7/10
The sixth instalment of the Harry Potter series is neither the best nor the worst so far. The acting has improved considerably and the effects are better than ever but nothing really happens and there are some unforgivably slow stretches.
0.3
Sunshine Cleaning
8/10
Enjoyably quirky, emotionally engaging and frequently funny comedy-drama with a sharply observed script and great performances from Amy Adams and Emily Blunt.
0.3
The Haunting In Connecticut
7/10
Watchable, well made and superbly acted horror movie with several strong scenes, though it’s never remotely scary beyond a handful of the usual shock tactics.
0.3
Obsessed
6/10
Enjoyably rubbish thriller enlivened by strong performances and a decent climax that just about compensates for the film’s failures in pacing and plotting.
0.3
Duplicity
8/10
Writer-director Tony Gilroy’s follow-up to Michael Clayton is a beautifully shot, well written and impressively acted thriller that’s both suspenseful and emotionally engaging.
0.3
Ice Age 3 : Dawn of the Dinosaurs
6/10
Like the other films in the series, this is beautifully animated and stays watchable thanks to its likeable cast of characters, but it’s never as funny as it should be and the 3D effects are under-used.
0.3Tony Scott’s movies feel like other people’s seizures. Man on Fire, Deja vu, Domino — if you don’t know already, there will be jump-cuts and freeze-frames, feverish close-ups and aerial pirouettes; never mind the lunging 360s around tense, seething actors. Being static is not an option; there will be plenty of time for that after you’ve been gunned down.
0.3
Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past
8/10
Enjoyable, well acted romcom that pushes all the right emotional buttons, though it’s not as consistently funny as it should have been.
0.3
Drag Me To Hell
9/10
Hugely enjoyable, genuinely scary and frequently hilarious, this is a superbly acted horror flick with terrific special effects that shows director Sam Raimi joyfully returning to his Evil Dead roots.
0.3There’s plenty of bloodletting in Gianna Jun’s much touted Hollywood debut, the Korean actress best known for her breakout role in My Sassy Girl. Gianna plays Saya, a 400-year-old vampire hunter, also a “Halfling”- born of a human father and a vampire mother- on a quest to kill the vilest and most powerful vampire of them all, Onigen.
0.3There’s no doubting Miley’s boundless energy, but this is strictly for fans - it’s not as much fun as you might expect and the message it sends out is confused, to say the least.
0.3
Terminator Salvation
6/10
What’s most surprising about McG’s humorless yet action-packed “Terminator Salvation,” the fourth film in the long-running “Terminator” franchise, is that Christian Bale, widely touted as the film’s star, has only a co-starring role as John Connor, on whom the fate of humanity long has rested.
0.3
Monsters Vs Aliens
7/10
For the most part the DreamWorks animation machine has been consistently effective in keeping the kiddies and grown-ups fascinated by the engaging, imaginative characterizations not to mention the dazzling CG-animated visuals that encourages that eye-popping sensation.
0.3Entertaining sequel that survives its paper-thin plot and lazy writing thanks to superb special effects and a trio of terrific comic performances from Amy Adams, Hank Azaria and Bill Hader.
0.3
Star Trek
9/10
Hugely enjoyable, wonderfully cast and genuinely thrilling blockbuster that, incredibly, gets everything right and will please both die-hard Trekkies and newcomers alike.
0.3
Friday The 13th
7/10
Entertaining slasher remake that’s well acted and delivers the requisite amount of gruesome deaths, but it’s nowhere near as scary as the original.
0.3
X-Men Origins : Wolverine
7/10
Everything one would expect from an X-Men movie, but unfortunately it cannot entirely escape its, er, origins as a prequel.
0.3
Notorious
6/10
Notorious (6/10) : A watchable, if admittedly one-sided, biopic with a handful of strong performances, though it rarely scratches the surface of its subject and wears out its welcome long before the end.
0.3
Revolutionary Road
9/10
Beautifully shot, superbly written drama that exerts a powerful emotional grip and features terrific performances from a reunited Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio.
0.3
The International
8/10
The International has its fair share of dodgy moments, but these are more than compensated for by an amusingly topical plot, some stunning photography and a thrilling shoot-out sequence.
0.3
Taken
9/10
Superbly directed, with a terrific performance from Liam Neeson, this bone-crunching, arse-kicking action thriller is one of the guiltiest pleasures of the year.
0.3
17 Again
8/10
Enjoyable, frequently funny body swap comedy with likeable characters, a decent script and a superb central performance from Zac Efron.
0.3
The Unborn
6/10
Well made, but ultimately underwhelming horror that never really comes to life, despite some creepy visuals and a handful of cheap shocks.
0.3
Fast & Furious
7/10
The fourth installment of the adrenaline-fueled franchise built on speed reunites the four original characters for the first time in eight years as they head back to the streets of Los Angeles where the racing action began. The abbreviated title has dropped the “the” in front of the two adjectives so as not to be confused with the original 2001 movie.
0.3
Knowing
8/10
Hugely enjoyable, surprisingly dark thriller with a strong premise, great performances and terrific special effects.
0.3
Grand Torino
9/10
Impressively directed, emotionally engaging drama with a strong script and a terrific performance from Clint Eastwood.
0.3
Confessions Of A Shopaholic
6/10
A disappointing romcom that suffers from an irritating lead character, an under-used supporting cast, a largely unfunny script and a cluttered, unsatisfying plot that’s at least 30 minutes too long.
