Movie Review : Crazy Heart

Well written, superbly directed and powerfully emotional drama featuring a terrific performance from Jeff Bridges that all but guarantees his Oscar for Best Actor.

Written and directed by Scott Cooper, Crazy Heart is based on a 1987 novel by Thomas Cobb and stars Jeff Bridges as Bad Blake, a 57-year-old, alcoholic, former country and western star who’s reduced to playing bars and bowling alleys across the country just to keep the booze flowing. However, when he tentatively begins a relationship with aspiring music journalist Jean (Maggie Gyllenhaal), he gets a glimpse of a better life, particularly when he bonds with her four-year-old son Buddy (Jack Nation).

Movie Review : Up In The Air

Hugely enjoyable, well written comedy-drama that delivers a powerful emotional kick, thanks to terrific performances and strong chemistry between Clooney and Farmiga.

Directed by Jason Reitman, Up in the Air is based on the comic novel by Walter Kirn (who wrote Thumbsucker) and stars George Clooney as Ryan Bingham, a management consultant who spends most of the year travelling, since his job is to fly all over the country and fire people whose companies are downsizing. Ryan has streamlined his life to the point where he has minimal contact with his family and no relationship ties, but he suddenly finds his lifestyle threatened when new recruit Natalie (Twilight’s Anna Kendrick), introduces a video-conferencing system that will permanently ground him if it takes off.

Movie Review : Alice In Wonderland

Not that there was any doubt that, when it came to restaging the 1865 Lewis Carroll classic for a 21st century sensibility, Tim Burton would be the man for the job. But even the filmmaker’s trademark winsomely outlandish style doesn’t prepare you for the thoroughly enjoyable spectacle that is his “Alice in Wonderland.”

A fantastical romp that proves every bit as transporting as that movie about the blue people of Pandora, his “Alice” is more than just a gorgeous 3D sight to behold. Armed with a smartly reshaped but still reverential script by Linda Woolverton (“Beauty and the Beast,” “The Lion King”), Burton has delivered a subversively witty, brilliantly cast, whimsically appointed dazzler that also manages to hit all the emotionally satisfying marks.

Movie Review : From Paris With Love

“From Paris With Love” shows you a wild and crazy side of John Travolta you have not seen before. You may have thought you had seen it all when he played a woman in “Hairspray” or even when he played good and bad roles in “Face/Off.” Then there was his career starting role as the singing/dancing Danny in “Grease.” But in “From Paris With Love” he out does all his other roles as he plays a profanity spewing killing machine named Charlie Wax.

The focus in “From Paris With Love” is on diplomatic attaché and CIA trainee James Reece (Jonathan Rhys Meyers). He lives in Paris with his girlfriend Caroline (Kasia Smutniak) and works for Ambassador Bennington (Richard Durden). He also moonlights as a CIA trainee of sorts.
