In The Tournament, a shoot’em up game that tests the skills of deadly assassins against one another in real time, it’s all about the carnage. Just think, a gorier mash up between Battle Royale, Smokin’ Aces, The Running Man, and you’ve just about got it. The movie starts with a splash as the returning champion killer Hawlow (Ving Rhames) slays the first of his competition in a crimson tide that’s wet enough to rival the famous elevator scene in The Shining.

The Tournament hits the ground running from there, truly living up to its “non-stop action” premise (the only other two recently-released movies I can think of to top it in that arena would be the Crank films and the absolutely awesome Shoot’Em Up). Director Scott Mann is smart to keep audiences head-spinningly breathless, because there are unforgivable logic lapses and plot holes big enough to run 10 battering rams through.

Armored starts well but quickly runs out of steam, thanks to dull characters, a weirdly moralistic script, an extremely tedious middle section and a general lack of ideas.

Directed by Nimrod Antal (Vacancy), Armored stars Columbus Short as Ty, a rookie armoured truck guard who’s struggling to support his kid brother Jimmy (Andre Kinney) after the death of their parents. When a welfare agent suggests that Jimmy might be taken into care, Ty reluctantly agrees to come in on a $42 million heist planned by fellow guards Mike (Matt Dillon), Baines (Laurence Fishburne), Palmer (Amaury Nolasco), Quinn (Jean Reno) and Dobbs (Skeet Ulrich).

Richard Kelly’s creepily atmospheric thriller starts well and is suitably dark and weird throughout but it starts to unravel in the second half and becomes increasingly pretentious and annoying.

Directed by Richard Kelly and based on both a short story and a Twilight Zone episode by Richard Matheson (I Am Legend), The Box is set in 1976 Virginia and stars Cameron Diaz and James Marsden as Norma and Arthur Lewis, a strapped-for-cash couple with a teenaged son (Sam Oz Stone). Then a facially disfigured stranger (Frank Langella) turns up on their doorstep with a mysterious black box with a red button on it and tells them that if they push the button, they will earn $1 million but someone they don’t know will die as a result.

Terry Gilliam’s latest film will delight and infuriate in equal measure; it’s messy, rambling, patchy and occasionally annoying, but it’s also visually stunning and superbly acted, with moments of magic that no other director could pull off.

Billed as A Film by Heath Ledger and Friends, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is directed by Terry Gilliam and stars Christopher Plummer as Parnassus, an immortal travelling showman who runs a ramshackle magic act, assisted by his daughter Valentina (Lily Cole), assistant Anton (Andrew Garfield) and dwarf Percy (Verne Troyer). Parnassus’ immortality is due to a deal he’s made with the devil, Mr Nick (Tom Waits) and as Valentina nears her 16th birthday, Mr Nick reminds Parnassus that her soul will soon belong to him.
